If getting started is the hardest part of the writing process , close behind it (and closely related to it) may be the challenge of finding a ​ good topic to write about. Of course, sometimes an instructor will solve that problem for you by assigning a topic. But other times you'll have the opportunity to choose a topic yourself, and you should really think of this as a great opportunity to write about something you care about and know well.

So relax. Don't worry if a great topic doesn't immediately spring to mind. Be ready to play with a number of ideas until you settle on one that truly interests you. IELTS  Writing Task 1 Academic Topics 2021: A Complete Guide to Writing Preparation

Candidates ​have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete all parts of the IELTS test. Reading, writing, and listening skills are assessed together, regardless of whether the test is paper-based or computer-based. You must learn smart strategies to help you speed up your work when taking the IELTS test.

Smart strategies will also help you improve your accuracy. So, when you begin your training, make a note of the strategies to be used and use them in your practice session. The applicant is given 60 minutes for the writing segment, during which time he or she must complete two tasks. Each task has questions where the candidate needs to describe, put forward his/her opinion or argument, and discuss the text. It is advisable that the candidate should become well versed with the smart tricks to complete the task in the stipulated time. 

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic Topics 2021

In IELTS Task 1, a description of 150 words is required as an answer to the graph, table, diagram, or letter provided. This role measures the capacity for the identification of the key attributes, data comparisons, or patterns. When describing visual depictions or letters, the ratings are focused not just on how good you are at writing in English but also on other components like vocabulary, grammar, and coherence. 

 The writing section in the IELTS examination aims to assess the rationale and analytical abilities of candidates preparing for their studies abroad. Now, universities abroad have a distinct and non-cliched type of teaching. When you are giving the IELTS writing task 1 make sure that you keep in mind the important points that will help you in completing the examination with greater accuracy. IELTS Writing Task 1 Preparation

 In task 1, candidates must write a short report in IELTS Academic Writing by analyzing the data provided in the map, diagram, tables, or combination. It can be simple or complicated which generally depends on the type of diagram that is given in the paper. The student must showcase the graphical representation for the writing task 1 Academic and in 150 terms must write a paper in 20 minutes. If the candidates do not surpass the word cap, it would be better, so no extra credit is available for additional writing. The examples of the IELTS university-level written task 1 are a great support.

IELTS Table Chart

Table content in the IELTS writing examination is called the table chart.  In IELTS, the description of a table is the same as that of a bar graph. Candidates need to compare and contrast the data provided in the table query. Candidates should make sure that it is original and attractive while writing. Use your creativity while writing the answer. 

The candidate should evaluate whether the question is in the past, present, or future and write the answer accordingly to define the table. In addition, the IELTS  task 1 vocabulary list must also be developed to help you clarify the query effectively. It is advised that you should break the data into various parts so that you can clarify and understand it easily. Data that is special can also be found.

It is very important how you organize your answer since it represents your thinking flow. You can build your own structure because it is not governed hard and quick. The dividing of the key functions in separate paragraphs is a way of explaining the given data. This allows you to indicate your point on any key characteristic.

IELTS Graph Preparation

The question paper of IELTS typically contains a bar graph question. The measurement is similar to the graph on the line. There are also two axes in the IELTS bar chart that reflect changes over time. The diagram bars have horizontal or vertical rectangular bars. Data with 2 or more values are represented. Analyzing the issue and understanding is the first step. The questions are a short summary of the graph, graph, chart, or table instructions. It is really important to identify the core concept.

 The bar chart questions should be easy to answer, as they test your linguistic skills and not mathematical abilities. You should be able to extract and write about the main function. In the introduction, all you have to do is paraphrase the question. Synonyms may be used and the query rephrased. The language used is essential to sound natural.

IELTS Pie Chart

Pie Chart is a circular diagram that has categories mentioned with the percentage. Pie diagrams are circular diagrams, which typically show the percentages in parts or pie sections. The percentage of data it reflects is shown in each segment of the pie chart. It forms a circle when you bring together all the pieces. When you are attempting the Pie Chart question you should start with its introduction. The introduction may take up to 2 phrases and the phrase already in the question may be paraphrased when presenting it. 

 You have to compose a description of the graph in the second paragraph. You have to choose and clarify some of the key features of the map. First of all, you should take from the pie chart and describe the largest or smallest pieces. Second, recognize those who have not changed over time. You can write on any of the options, but don’t write them all.

More than One Graph

Two charts will be one of the basic task 1 questions. In this problem, you should concentrate on both diagrams – mention data on both diagrams, locate and state the main characteristics of each diagram. In contrast to the other charts, however, everything you see in the charts does not have to be defined. Select and correctly summarise the important details. When more than one graph is given make sure that you don’t miss the important information given in it. You have to focus on both the graphs so that any important information that needs to be concentrated does not skip out of our minds. Multiple graphs can be confusing but once you know the trick to go for such a question you can easily attempt such questions. 

Tips to Prepare for Writing Task 1

There are few tips that will help you attempt the writing task1 easily without any hassle. Make sure that you read all the points and understand them clearly. These tips can help you a lot. 

  1. Write an Overview 

An overview is just a summary of the important points that you encounter in the graph, process, chart, or map. It is usually 2-3 phrases long and the second paragraph you write in your essay should be. It also determines what you write in the remaining essay, as we can see below. An overview is the first thing an examiner searches since it indicates that the most relevant details can be identified from the chart or the graph and that general patterns and similarities are clearly determined. An overview is the first thing an examiner looks at since it shows the features of the chart or graph can be found and general trends and similarities are clearly defined.

The candidate needs to provide a concise description of the key characteristics. You make this by choosing 3-4 of the most important items you will see and writing them generally in the summary paragraph. Generally speaking, I mean, you can’t help something that is displayed in graph or diagram results.

2. Paraphrasing an Important Skill

Paraphrasing is an important skill needed in the writing section. Paraphrasing is the skill to change the sentence using different words and different sentence structures but having the same meaning. You are more likely to get the score you like when you know how to paraphrase. The mental processes necessary for paraphrasing will also help you to understand the issue thoroughly and this is one of the reasons behind the advice to paraphrase the question before starting with the answer. One important part of paraphrasing is using synonyms. You should have a good vocabulary to use different words with the same meaning in the sentence. This helps a lot in paraphrasing any sentence.

IELTS practice General Training Writing test - Task 1

How to approach general training writing task 1.

In the real IELTS General Training Writing test, you will have one hour to complete both of the two set writing tasks.

Task 1 should take you 20 minutes, leaving 40 minutes for Task 2. Before starting the first practice task, you might like to set an alert to make sure you don’t go too far over.

When you take your IELTS General Training Writing test, you will move from the first to the second task without a break. In order to give you a good idea of the test experience, you should do the same here, moving straight from practice Task 1 to practice Task 2.

Q: How long should I spend on IELTS Writing Task 1?

A: You should spend 20 minutes on this task – saving 40 minutes for Task 2.

Q: How many words should I write for IELTS Writing Task 1?

A: You should write at least 150 words.

Q: How should I prepare for the practice IELTS Writing Task 1?

A: For your practice tests,  you should find a quiet place to work where you will be undisturbed for the whole hour.

Task 1 – Write about the following topic:

A friend has agreed to look after your house and pet while you are on holiday. Write a letter to your friend.

In your letter

• Give contact details for when you are away
• Give instructions about how to care for your pet
• Describe other household duties you would like your friend to undertake

When giving contact details, you do NOT need to write any addresses; something like the name of a friend you are staying with or a holiday destination is fine.

The format for this IELTS Writing task is simple. Just begin your letter as follows:

Once you have completed this task you should move straight on to Task 2.

At the end of Task 2, you will be given model answers for both parts of the test. You can use these to  compare your answers, evaluate your performance, and consider what, if anything, you might change were you to complete these tasks again.

Recent IELTS General Writing Task 1 Topics

Here you can view recent IELTS General Writing Task 1 Topics. In the task 1 for general training writing you have to write a letter.

The letter can be informal , to somebody like a friend, semi- formal , maybe to your landlord or a course tutor, or formal , to somebody such as a bank manager or shop manager. 

If you have taken the general test recently, then you can post the question you had using the form at the bottom of this page. 

This can help others preparing for the test. 

There is an annual work party next month, which is held every year.  

Write a letter to your colleagues to co-arrange the party. In your letter:

• Say what would you do differently than last year
• Say what you think were some of the things not so good last year
• Suggest where to meet to plan for the party.

Your child is going on a three day school trip to another country. The head teacher wants to find parents to go with the group and you would like to go.

Write a letter to the head teacher. In your letter:

• Say why you would like to go on the trip
• Suggest what you could do to help during the trip
• Ask other questions about the trip

Your friend had made a plan for you to see a movie together but you cannot now not join him. You've found another friend who can go instead of you.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:

• Explain why you cannot go anymore
• Say who can go instead of you
• Say why this person is a good person to go with

A local college is having an international day. You want to speak about your country to students from different cultures.

Write a letter to the college head. In your letter:

• Tell him/her about the topics that you are going to talk about
• Explain why would they be of interest to the students 
• Ask about any arrangements that you need to make to give the talk

You recently read an article in a newspaper about your childhood friend with whom you have lost contact for a long time.

Write a letter to the editor. In your letter:

• Say which edition and when did the article appear
• Explain why you lost contact with your friend
• Say how you want them to help you to get back in touch

You recently attended a meeting at a hotel. When you returned home, you found you had left some important papers at the hotel.

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel.  In your letter:

• Say where you think you left the papers
• Explain why they are so important
• Tell the manager what you want him/her to do 

Your office building doesn't have parking available. 

Write a letter to the manager. In your letter:

• Explain the problem 
• Suggest a solution
• Say why parking will benefit all employees 

There is a problem with the changing rooms in the sports centre that you visit. You have complained several times but with no success.   

Write a letter to the manager of the sports centre. In your letter:

• Describe what the problem with the changing rooms is
• Say what happened the last times you complained
• Explain what you want the manager to do

Your child is going away on a school trip for three days to another country. The head teacher wants some parents to join the trip and you would like to go.  

• Say why you would like to go
• Ask some more questions about the trip

You have missed some important papers accidently in a taxi.

Write a letter to the manager of the Taxi company. In your letter:

• Give the details of your journey
• Explain why those papers are important for you
• Suggest what can the manager do

A friend has agreed to stay in your flat (apartment) and look after it while you are away. You want to give your friend some information about the flat. 

Write a letter to this freind. In your letter:

• Give information about the flat
• Provide any important instructions
• Say what he/she should do if there are any problems

Your company is going to give a special training course for staff. Your manager has asked you to find out if the local conference centre has the right facilities to hold this course. 

Write a letter to the manager of the conference centre. In your letter:

• Give details about the course
• Describe what equipment you will need for the course
• Ask some further questions about the facilities at the conference centre

Although monetary aid can help the destitute in several ways, it does not improve their condition substantially. In the following paragraphs, I will explore the topic in-depth and justify my views on the same.

The predicament faced by the homeless is much more complex than meets the eye. Most of the people who cannot afford the basic necessities of life are facing such hardships due to generational poverty or lack of proper education and thereby limited employment prospects. Thus, mere financial assistance in the form of cash is insufficient in ameliorating the situation of the underprivileged and unsettled.

Furthermore, due to the transient nature of vagrants, the safety of a lump sum amount is questionable in the hands of such people. There have been many instances where individuals have faced threats and mishaps due to the possession of valuables. Also, in many cases, homeless people end up spending assistance money on harmful and illegal items. Therefore, providing such people with monetary assistance can often put their lives in danger.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that even the slightest degree of assistance can significantly ease the difficulties of the needful. That being said, it is important to find a long-term solution rather than providing short-term support.

In conclusion, the plight of the homeless has been a complication for ages. Thus, to overcome this problem, more sophisticated measures should be taken than giving monetary aid.

As memorization by repetition indirectly obstructs mental development and growth of aptitude, people might find themselves in a plight when a situation arrives where conceptual knowledge is mandatory. Additionally, this method of learning tends to become habitual and thereby hard to change.

In conclusion, I would like to say that rote learning has become a very typical part of the present education system. Nevertheless, we must understand that such an approach does not facilitate proper learning.

In solution essays, the topic will be a problem and you’ll have to give a solution to the particular issue. Sometimes the question may also be posed as to why this particular issue happened, and you’ll have to present your opinions based on the issue.

In order to tackle the problem of overpopulation, people have to be educated on various aspects and topics that are typically stigmatized in various societies. Indeed, the growth in population cannot be curbed immediately. Thus, to ease the dependence of mankind on fossil fuels, alternative sources of energy must be discovered. If global superpowers and wealthy nations work in unison against the issue of excessive population growth, only then will this predicament be ameliorated.

When you think of your cultural or familial traditions, do you think of food? The meals that are part of your holiday celebrations? The special dishes your parents or grandparents have prepared for you? The flavors that remind you of who you are and where you’re from?

Why does food mean so much to us? Here is what one student had to say:

I think cultural food symbolizes identity and culture. Especially with immigrant families, recipes that have been passed down through generations have symbolized a taste of home. I am a first generation American and the majority of my extended family lives 3,000 miles away. The thought of an Irish shepherd’s pie makes me feel safe and nostalgic, reflecting on memories of spending time with my grandparents. Cultural food is a reminder that wherever you go your identity and values follow. — Ella, W.T. Clarke High School, Westbury, N.Y.

How do you celebrate, honor and remember your culture and family through food?

1. What Is Mealtime Like for Your Family?

Food culture, of course, starts in our own families, at our own dinner tables. What is dinnertime like in your household? With this prompt, explore a typical weeknight dinner for 18 families around the world and then tell us about your family’s usual dinner.

Or, in this one, share the most popular dishes you eat at home. Daniel, from Poly High School, says tacos de chorizo is at the top of his family’s list because “it’s something that we grew up with and it’s one of the few foods that everyone in my household loves.”

2. How Is Food a Part of Your Holiday or Cultural Celebrations?

What special cultural or holiday traditions do you have that involve food? On Lunar New Year , for example, people eat and give fruit as a symbol of luck and prosperity. For Ramadan , Muslims around the world fast, eating each evening after the sun sets and squeezing in a predawn meal before it rises again.

Share how food is a part of a holiday your family or community celebrates.

3. What Foods Remind You of Where You Come From?

Are there foods, that, every time you smell, see or taste them, immediately remind you of someone or some place close to your heart?

In this essay , for example, a writer shares how making chickpeas and spinach, or revithia me spanaki, reminds him of his Greek father. And in this piece , a journalist who is Syrian but grew up in the United States writes about what Syrian food means to her.

4. What Cooking Traditions Do You Have in Your Family or Culture?

Food heritage can be found not only in what we eat but also in how we make it. For example, the smoking method pictured above is one technique that Indigenous cooks and scholars in Canada are reclaiming and popularizing as part of a growing culinary affirmation of identity.

Are there certain types of foods or ways of preparing meals that are specific to your family’s way of life or culture? What does participating in these traditions mean to you?

5. Who Are the Notable Cooks in Your Family?

“The notable cook in my extended family would be my Aunt Tracy,” Chloe from Chicago writes. “I grew up doing homework in her kitchen after school. She would always be making something that made you drool, and have your senses crave it.”

6. How Does Your Culture Influence What You Eat?

Does your culture, religion or family have any rules around food? For example, do you keep kosher or eat halal? Are you vegetarian? Or, is meat so central to your diet and traditions that you would have a hard time giving it up ?

Share how your culture influences the way that you eat and whether you ever have gone, or would go, against the way you were raised.

7. Where, When and for What Reasons Do You Gather to Eat With Loved Ones?

Are large gatherings part of your family traditions? If so, is food involved? Describe your most memorable family gathering and what makes it stand out. What role did food play in the celebration? What did it mean to you?

I enjoy large get-togethers because I don’t have any relatives in the United States apart from my immediate family. These get-togethers, therefore, are almost always with other families in the local Chinese community. The community is effectively an extended family when the real relatives are on the other side of the world … The food is always a potluck, with many Chinese dishes coming together to satisfy the hunger for the children and to remind the adults of their home. We always eat together, and I think this is one of the most important things connecting us.

Korean fried chicken in Los Angeles’s Koreatown, paella in Barcelona, mashed taters in Cartersville, Ga., and green chile in New Mexico were just a few of the dishes students shared in response to this prompt .

If someone were to visit your hometown for a day, what foods or restaurants would you recommend? How would these meals help the visitor know you and your community better?

Students 13 and older in the United States and Britain, and 16 and older elsewhere, are invited to comment. All comments are moderated by the Learning Network staff, but please keep in mind that once your comment is accepted, it will be made public and may appear in print.

BANG YEDAM discusses solo debut with 'ONLY ONE', creative process and artistic identity.

For Korean singer-songwriter BANG YEDAM , music has always been an outlet to express how he feels. Much of the 21-year-old's life has been shaped by music.

He got his start in the industry at just 10 years old, becoming the runner-up on the second season of the competition show "K-pop Star." He later debuted with boy group TREASURE in 2020.

Now, YEDAM is embarking on a new chapter: Solo artist. His first solo EP " ONLY ONE " released Nov. 23, spotlighting the varied nature to YEDAM's prowess as a singer, songwriter and producer.

'ONLY ONE' reintroduces BANG YEDAM

The six tracks on "ONLY ONE" shine a light on the different facets of YEDAM's artistry. From bright sonics and captivating melodies to smooth, emotive tones, YEDAM is not confined to a single genre. His work is versatile, yet still lays the foundation to a signature flair.

YEDAM was involved throughout the production of "ONLY ONE", with him calling the process "so much fun." "Seeing my song being developed into the final result for this album, I just loved the process," YEDAM told USA TODAY.

Writing music is like 'preparing a gift for someone'

"This album really revolves around the theme of love," YEDAM said. Each track traverses and dissects an aspect of the emotion, whether it be reflective longing in " Miss You " or infatuation in " Come To Me ".

YEDAM wanted to create something others could relate to. "When I'm writing music, there are some parts that I do it because I just love writing music," he said. "There's also another part of me that does it because I want to see other people enjoy my music. I feel like it's a process of preparing a gift for someone."

He hopes listeners can resonate with the lyrics and messages throughout "ONLY ONE".

"There were times for me that when I listen to music, I really look at the lyrics and get the message and then put that into action," said YEDAM. "I hope the same for the listeners of my music as well."

Reflecting on growth and hopes for the future

YEDAM said he's grown a lot since he began at such a young age. As he gotten older, YEDAM has gained more experience and learned new things. He has developed into a better artist, but also into a better person.

As he starts this new era, YEDAM is ambitious, but remains humble. He has aspirations and things he wants to achieve but takes each day as it comes.

"Regarding my solo debut, I'm somewhat pressured by it, somewhat burdened by it, but at the same time, I'm really excited about it," he said.

YEDAM hopes to be an artist people can empathize with, and no matter what the future holds, music continues to be in YEDAM's vision.

"In the future, I envision myself to be a better musician," he said. "I hope to continue doing my work in the music."
