How to Write a Book Summary

When a teacher or anyone else asks you to write a book summary, he or she is requesting that you read a book and write a short account that explains the main plot points, characters and any other important information in your own words. The reader of your summary should have an understanding of the book without having ever read it. Many teachers and professors ask students to do this to ensure they read and understand the material they’ve assigned. If you’re currently working on your first book summary, here’s how to do it:

Before you get started, you need to know what your teacher expects from you. Did he or she assign a particular book, or can you select you own? you’ll also need to know how long the summary should be. Your teacher may want it to be at least a page or two or so many words so that you can show that you really understood what you read.

Start Reading and Take Notes

As soon as you have the book in hand, whether your teacher assigned it or you chose it yourself, you should grab a pen and notebook to keep with you at all times. Anytime you read a chapter or two, you’ll want to take notes about what you read. Make a list of the characters and their problems and goals. Keep an outline of the plot. Remember, you’re not rewriting the book entirely — just picking out the most important details and retelling them in your voice. You can also make note when you find something interesting or you see something you need to understand better.

Create an Introduction

Once you finish the book, you should have a few pages of notes and a good understanding of what happened, who the main characters were and all of the important plot points. Now, it’s time to start writing the summary. you’ll want to start with a strong introductions that tells the reader exactly what you want them to know. Be straightforward about the title and author of the book and give a general idea in a sentence or two of what it’s about. You may want to introduce a setting here too. For example, if you read “Gone with the Wind,” you may start with something like “Set during the Civil War, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is an epic novel that tells the story of a young Southern woman in Georgia, her love affairs and her attempts to save her family plantation while the South burns down around here.”

Organize Your Notes to Create the Body

Once you’ve introduced the book with a few sentences, it’s time to write the body of the summary. This is where you’ll turn to your notes. If you didn’t create an outline before, now is the time to do so. Organize your points in order in paragraph form. The ultimate goal is for the reader to know exactly what the book was about, even if he or she has never read it. Try putting yourself in the reader of your summary’s shoes. What would you need to know to understand what the book was about? Once you’ve finished the body, add a conclusion that gives the reader an understanding of significance of the book. Did it teach a lesson, or was there a moral to the story? Were there themes present throughout the book?

Edit and Proofread

Once you’ve finished, read over your summary a few times to make sure it makes sense. Not only do you want to check for spelling and grammar errors, but you’ll want to make sure the description flows from point to point and makes sense. Try reading it out loud to yourself to see how it sounds when you hear it. Read it a friend or family member to see if they can provide any feedback. Once you’re certain it’s complete, you can turn it in to your teacher or professor.

Report on the reading and spelling bee reading competition between Bolga North circuit and Bolga West b circuit sponsored by FAVL/CESRUD

The event was December 20, 2022, and started with an opening prayer by Madam Jatrude at 10:30am. The library coordinator welcome everyone to the occasion. Next was introduction of invited guest’s library committee and teachers from both circuits. The regional librarian, Mr. Leslie Kasanga then gave a short message. He congratulated the pupils for taking up the task of reading and spelling and asked them to keep it up. He then briefs us about happenings in the regional library. Bolga North Circuit supervisor thanked the sponsors and organizers and asked them to continue to organize such programs, because it brings improvement in the type of results we get in these circuits. The west B circuit Supervisor encouraged the students to keep reading at home. It was now time for the contestants to take their seats and introduce themselves. The quiz master then gave the rules for the competition. And kick start with first round of the spelling. At the end of the first round Bolga North Circuit came out with 45 points and Bolga West B 45 points. At the end of the second round Bolga North came out with 43 points and Bolga West B 43 points. at the end of round three, that is the reading round Bolga North got 26 points and Bolga West B had 30 points. Next was the J.H.S category competition. The contestants introduced themselves and the quiz master started with the competition. At the end of the first round for spelling Bolga North came out with 45 points and Bolga West B 42 points and at the end of the second round Bolga North came out with 42 points and Bolga West B 46 points at the end of round three, that is the reading round Bolga North came out with 25 points and Bolga West B 27 points

The Bolga West B Circuit came out with as winner with 115 points and Bolga North J.H.S category came second with 112 points. The bolga west B primary category came out as winners with 118 points and the bolga north circuit primary category came out second with 114 points. The contestants were awarded certificates, drinks, biscuit, mathematical sets, exercise books, pens and bags. The west B circuit Chair Madam Mercy congratulated the contestants and thanked the sponsors and organizers for such an inspiring and wonderful program. The meeting ended with a closing prayer by Mohammed Awini Abugrago.

Reading Competition: “Malcolm X” by Helfer and DuBurke Essay

If you are a student or were the one once, you must have had the same experience as I had during my happy weekends. In those days, I could stay at home reading my endless assignments and having fun with my friends at various parties. Perhaps, you have noticed that some people spend more time on entertainment than reading. Probably, it is because they realize neither the best way to read nor the importance of reading to their future. We all know that reading is important, and most of us do not want to regret in the future failing to achieve our goals. We should, therefore, find ways that could help us read more efficiently.

As an independent student with his/her discretions, one should not find reading difficult or boring activity. This is possible if only we can discover the best ways to read which vary depending on the choice of each individual and his/her background. In my case, I found my best reading method after joining high school, due to a reading competition against my best friend. While in China, I found English to be a very important subject for every high school since it could even determine the choice of a university that a student aspired to join after graduating from High school. Teachers as well focus more on reading. Students have to answer several questions after reading; this assignment is a standard criterion based on which teachers evaluate them. To win in this competition, I read more carefully than ever before. I began to realize that if I wanted to make the right answers and win, I must have defined the main idea in the article and summarised it.

Due to competition, reading would no longer be a boring task. In contrast, it became the most essential part of my daily life. Should I win, then I would focus on maintaining the best level of reading and keep on winning. However, if I lose, then I would read even harder to win in the subsequent competition. There is as well another method of learning to read which does not involve competition. Malcolm X learned to read by copying the dictionary (Helfer and DuBurke 72). Likewise, I have learned to read using competition to encourage me, thus it is my best reading method. However, each one can find his own “unique” method to improve in reading.

During the period when one is searching for the best way to read, some ideas or thoughts may come into his/her mind, which probably influences his/her future as well as changes his/her entire life. The positive impact of reading on some great people shown in their autobiographies has given me some new ideas and encouraged me to occupy with my favorite activity, which is reading autobiographies of successful business executives. I also learn to inspire others rather than just develop myself. the book Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography has influenced me to read history books about different races and people who devoted their lives to fighting against the white and defending the rights of the black (Helfer and DuBurke 57). Consciously or unconsciously, reading will affect you altering your views in the way Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography has changed me.

While you are trying to discover your best reading method to change your life, you should realize that you will not be the only one to benefit from it. Everyone around you will be an advantage as you will be influential and able to advise them on a difficult situation. They may as well derive inspiration from your example. This shows how serious one should be in selecting a reading method. Before the reading competition, I was just an average student in English. However, after the reading competition, I became among the top five best English students in my class. This surprised the entire class. It motivated my classmates to join the competition. It also impressed our English teacher so he began to award us with presents for making some progress. Consequently, our class became the best performing class in English in terms of grades.

I influenced a small group of people around me while I was learning to read, even though it was not my original intention. I had learned from Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography that Malcolm X influenced a lot more people, including those he had neither known nor ever met before. He used all his life experiences to transform others. He did this by copying the dictionary when he was in prison for fighting for the civil rights of the black around the world. Reading competition has become the most effective method for me to learn to read. Anyone has the potential to find his or her way to achieve success. It does not matter what method you use as long as it works for you. You should develop your approach to read and learn more trying to absorb the knowledge from the books as well as from your thoughts and ideas.

Competition Divisions

Chinese Section

  • Junior Division: F.1 – F.3 (not less than 450 words)
  • Senior Division: F.4 - F.6 (not less than 650 words)

English Section

  • Junior Division: F.1 – F.3 (between 600 and 800 words)
  • Senior Division: F.4 - F.6 (between 800 and 1,200 words)

Theme-based Reading Section (Chinese Section only)

*Include Hong Kong and Macau

Format of Entries

  • Please write down student’s name, school name and entry number in the entry.
  • Please list the book title, author, and publisher in the entry.
  • The word limits for the Junior Division is between 600 and 800 words, and the Senior Division is between 800 and 1,200 words, including punctuation.
  • Entries should be legible and tidy. The number of pages and the total number of words must be specified.
  • Handwritten or typewritten entries on standard A4 size paper are acceptable, paper with school letterhead or badge is not allowed.

Regulations

  • All entries must be recommended and submitted by schools. Each school should submit not more than 10 pieces of entries in each division.
  • Each participant shall submit one entry only.
  • All entries should be in written format.
  • Participants may choose any books for the Chinese / English Extensive Reading Section.
  • Extensive reading section only for schools in Hong Kong and Macau.

Terms and conditions

  • The organizers have the right to disqualify entries that do not meet the above format or terms and conditions.
  • An entry must be the original work of the entrant and does not infringe upon the rights (including intellectual property rights, rights of privacy or confidentiality) of any other parties. Entrants are responsible for all legal liabilities. Shall their entries violate any laws, the organizers will not be held legally responsible.
  • Entries should not contain any content that is obscene, violent, pornographic, defamatory, indecent, disparaging, controversial or inappropriate.
  • The personal information provided on the application form will be kept confidential and for internal use only.
  • All information collected in this competition will only be used for the purpose of joining this competition and related matter. The organizers may retain some personal information (e.g. name, phone number, email address) for related promotion.

  • Hong Kong Educational Publishing Company Ltd. reserves the right to amend the regulations of the competition. Should there be any disputes, Hong Kong Educational Publishing Company Ltd. reserves the right to make the final decision.

World Book Day Book Reading Competition

Reading is fun – and it is also one of the useful ways of learning a new language.

We have been running a  Book Reading Competition since 2010 in partnership with different educational institutions to provide students with the opportunity to read literature from around the world in simplified English. The competition involves the following activities:

  • reading books
  • taking part in an assessment.

Competition information and eligibility

  • To enter the competition, students must belong to a participating institution
  • Students from KG to university are eligible to take part in the competition
  • Schools, Colleges and Universities can take the competition where the minimum number of participants would be 200 (per session)
  • There will be a set of selected books for each class/semester. Book(s) will be selected in coordination with the individual institution
  • the participation fee is BDT 300 (per student per session).

All participating students will get a certificate of participation. Participants who score at least 40% in the assessment will receive a certificate for successful completion. Those that score 70% and above will win attractive prizes from the British Council.

All participants from KG to Class II will receive a certificate of attendance and a book as the prize.
